A01_The Cube

For this assignment, we were asked to use a series of additive and subtractive manipulations (using Curve, Surface, and Solid Editing Tools in Rhino) to transform a solid cube. We then made 2D representations of the manipulations in Rhino and exported them to Adobe Illustrator where we could highlight the changes and arrange them in a matrix for presentation.

Having some base knowledge of Rhino and other 3D modeling programs was a great asset in the modeling portion of this assignment because I knew what sort of manipulations were possible (such as extrude, sweep, chamfer, etc.) and I could use the Command Line to enable the tools that would allow me to make those manipulations. One set of tools that I had not used before but found extremely useful was the Boolean Operations tool set.

On the other hand, this was my first time using Adobe Illustrator and this project helped me to realize how powerful a software it is. Since I am used to working with Photoshop, I was familiar with the layout of the work space but the tools were new to me. Once I figured out how to use the new tools, I found that Illustrator is a much better tool for this sort of design work and that Photoshop is more for editing photos, not making drawings.
